Jewish Women of Rebetika

Category :: Concert
Folklore Society of Greater Washington presents:
Jewish Women of Rebetika

Within the provocative world of early 20th century urban Greek café life, and on this side of the Atlantic there were a surprising number of celebrated Jewish Greek female vocalists. While celebrated for their contributions to urban Greek cafe music known as Rebetika and Ianniotika, and to the recorded history of Sephardic music in America, the stories of these women are not widely known. Acclaimed vocalist Carol Freeman will present songs in Greek and Judeo-Espanol made famous by these women, interweaving excerpts from their personal histories. Hear the songs and fascinating life stories of the great Greek Rebetika Singers, Roza Eskenazi, Amalia Baca, Stella Haskil, and Victoria Hazan as performed by Carol with Beth Bahia Cohen on violin and Haig Manoukian on the oud.
