BJC LAUNCHES 2016-17 'GREAT NAMES' LECTURE SERIES WITH FILMMAKER AVIVA KEMPNER

Bethesda Jewish Congregation (BJC) is pleased to kick off its 'GREAT NAMES Community Lecture Series' season with Academy and Emmy award-nominated Aviva Kempner, an independent filmmaker since 1979. Ms. Kempner's presentation, part of an exciting and provocative fall/winter lecture series, is scheduled for Sunday, September 18th from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at BJC.

A child of a Holocaust survivor and a US Army officer, Ms. Kempner was born in Berlin, Germany after World War II. This legacy inspired her to produce and co-write "Partisans of Vilna" and executive produce the 1989 Grammy-award nominated record "Partisans of Vilna: The Songs of World War II Jewish Resistance." She is also the writer, director and producer of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" (2000), a documentary about the Jewish baseball slugger. The film was nominated for an Emmy, received the George Peabody Award and top honors by multiple film organizations. Among her many notable works is the Academy-award nominated documentary "Promises to Keep" about the homeless. She is the founder of the Washington Jewish Film Festival, and continues to lecture about cinema and write film criticism. Following Ms. Kempner's presentation there will be Q&A session and an opportunity to meet this versatile and lauded filmmaker.

All GREAT NAMES lectures are free, open to the community and held at BJC -- located at 6601 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda MD 20817. For more information on this and other events at BJC, call 301-469-8636, email [email protected] or visit our website at www.bethesdajewish.org.
