Finding God on the Bus

Hassidic Insights About God in Everyday Life
Finding God on the Bus
By Stan Dorn

Abraham Joshua Heschel was known for asking prospective rabbinical students whether they saw God on the bus en route to their interview. Not intended as psychiatric screening, this question emerged naturally from the perspectives of Heschel’s Chassidic forebears on encountering the divine in everyday life. This class will examine early Chassidic writings on this topic, focusing mainly on “Maor Eynayim” by Menachem Nahum of Chernobyl, a disciple of both the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid of Mezritch. We will read texts in English, but Hebrew will also be available.

In his day job, Stan is a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute specializing in health policy issues.
