Religious Zionism: A Volatile Blend of Mysticism

Category :: Educational
The pioneers who founded the State of Israel were primarily secular. Yet early on, religious thinkers, foremost among them Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook-began to incorporate spiritual Jewish teachings into the Zionist movement. After the Six Day War in 1967, this blend of nationalism, mysticism and messianism became the dominant ideology of Israel's religious right. This course will explore the development of mystical Zionism and will pose the following questions: is this the only form of religious Zionism today? Can we find a Zionist ideology that is both religious and liberal? What values would such an ideology espouse?

With Rabbi Lawrence A. Englander.
Tuesdays, October 20- November 24.
7:30pm-9:00 pm.

Pre-registration required. $130/$80 students and seniors.
