Naomi Chazan: Achievements and Challenges of Israel's Democracy
Israel’s democracy, a source of pride and strength, has recently been challenged in the areas such as gender equality, the delegitimization of human rights organizations, and the scope and composition of the Supreme Court. The New Israel Fund (NIF) has been deeply involved in these issues for more than 30 years.
Professor Naomi Chazan, president of the NIF, has been personally attacked in the most recent controversial assaults on NIF and the NGOs it supports. Chazan is a former Israeli Knesset Deputy Speaker and leading human rights activist. Professor Emerita of Political Science and African Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she served as Chair of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, and has been a Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard University.
Widely credited with building Israel’s progressive civil society from scratch, NIF leads Israel in an ongoing struggle to empower the underprivileged and disempowered.
