Loving Israel in Complicated Times

No one has a monopoly on what it means to be “Pro-Israel.”
Jews outside of Israel who love Israel have both a right and, indeed, an obligation to express
support in a way that reflects their values. Many Jews- particularly young ones- are walking away
from a relationship with Israel because they refuse to accept the notion that their relationship
with Israel can only be defined either as “Israel right or wrong” or as “Israel always wrong,”
positions that are all too evident in some parts of the community.
There is an important alternative for North Americans: to love, support and engage with the real
Israel: precious, imperfect and passionately worth fighting for.
Daniel J. Sokatch is the newly appointed CEO of the New Israel Fund (NIF), the leading organization
committed to equality and democracy for all Israelis. In recognition of his leadership,
Daniel has been named one of the Forward newspaper’s “Forward 50,” an annual list of
the fifty leading Jewish decision-makers and opinion-shapers, on three separate occasions.
