“The exodus and the travels from the land of their birth Ysrael to settlement in North East
India (the story of the Mizo Jews or the B’nei Menashe, sons of Mannaser”).
A lecture cum power point presentation by historian, Dr. Kranti K. Farias of Mumbai, India on Saturday, 15th January 2011 - 1:00pm Congregation Darchei Noam, 864 Sheppard Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario (Corner of Wilmington Ave. & Sheppard Avenue West)
"Dr. Kranti K. Farias got her Ph. D. from the University of Mumbai, having done her research at the Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
She is former President of The Church History Association of India whose Doctoral
work entitled “The Christian Impact in South Kanara” has been published in 1999.
She has published several artlcles and read Papers on Indian Nationalism, Indian Christians and Indian Jewish communities in India and Israel.
Her current area of scientific research is the history of the Jewish communities in India and in the disapora .Her special focus is on the B’nei Menashe (Mizo) Jews of North East India .
She is an experienced educationist, having been Principal of St. Aloysius Gonzaga High
School and Modern Indian School in Mumbai; lectured at the St. Xavier’s College and R. D.
National College in History and Political Science and was Lecturer- Teacher Educator at the
Rizvi College of Education, all in Mumbai
She conducts Workshops and Seminars in Educational Management, besides carrying on
with her research/ paper presentations in History.
She is involved with a few social service organisations in Mumbai in addition to her academic pursuits. She is at ease with Western Music (Pianoforte playing) holding certificates from the Trinity College of Music, London, and keenly interested in Speech and Drama as well".
The features of the lecture will be :
1) The four known Jewish Communities in India (in brief) with special focus on the B’nei Menashe (Mizo Jews of Mizoram and Manipur, North East India).
2) How the last mentioned Community made its exodus after the Fall of the Second Temple to India via the Himalayan regions.
3) From nomadic tribal life to settlement .
4) Christian attempts in India made for their conversion. They accept the chances offered them by the foreign missionaries to improve themselves .
5) How they have found their way back into mainline Judaism.
6) How they have retained their spirit and their culture as they incorporated whatever they found convenient and good from the people with whom they lived and intermingled.
This Scholar is about to publish her book on a cultural comparison of the Indian Jewish and Indian Christian Communities which should be an interesting expose of two Semitic communities living in India in harmony, to know about their roots and be proud of the heritage .
