Israeli cinema has experienced a significant coming-of-age in terms of its historical and social evolution and its increasing visibility and popularity on the international circuit. This course explores the new Israeli cinema that has emerged over the last two decades, examining films that look beyond the conflict, that turn away from the traditional topics of politics, religion and war, to focus on more personal subjects. While these films do specifically address Israeli culture and refer to Jewish history and sensibilities, they nonetheless present a more universal globalized perspective in their treatment of the social issues and psychological problems that affect all modern societies
