A Touch Away - The Israeli mini-series

Category :: Movie
A TOUCH AWAY portrays a captivating multi-family drama set in the Orthodox Tel Aviv neighbourhood of Bnei Barak amidst a cultural clash with the arrival of secular family from Russia.

This superb mini-series broke ratings records in Israel and was recently optioned by HBO.

Over 4 nights all 8 episodes will be screened starting with a recap – join at any time and stick around for lively post-screening discussions.

The show is in Hebrew and Russian with English subtitles.

Discussions will be led by esteemed special guests including:

MAY 19
ROBBIE GRINGRAS (Jerusalem-based actor / Artist-in-Residence, Makom Israel) and DR. DINA ROGINSKY (Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, University of Toronto) will explore the diversity of Israeli society and the inherent challenges of uniting many different and often divergent cultures.

MAY 26
DORIT NAAMAN (film theorist from Jerusalem, teaching at Queen's University) looks “outside the frame” of Zionism at “periphery cinema.” In recent years the most celebrated Israeli films focus on the periphery of Israeli society – both the physical periphery (development towns in the Negev or the Galillee) or the social and cultural periphery (the ultra orthodox community, the former Soviet immigrant community, or the migrant workers neighborhoods). A Touch Away belongs to that new genre and presents an interesting juncture.

JUNE 2
RABBI ELYSE GOLDSTEIN (Rabbinic Director of Kolel) will facilitate a discussion about the tensions between the religious and secular communities in Israel. Do the same struggles exist in our own community in Toronto?

JUNE 9
Stay tuned for the dramatic conclusion of A Touch Away...
