The Splintering of American Judaism - Fred Isaac

A talk and presentation by Fred Isaac.
Fred Isaac’s talk is based on the research for his new book, A Road of Our Own Choosing: A History of Reform Judaism in America. From its roots in Europe to the ideological battles of the 19th century, and from the post-war boom to the diverse community of today, the Reform movement has been at the center of the American Jewish story, and often at the center of the story of America itself. Isaac explores the events that kept the movement vibrant and relevant, and highlights the work of some of its influential leaders, including Isaac Mayer Wise, Abba Hillel Silver, and Oakland-born Rabbi Judah L. Magnes.
For this program Fred Isaac will focus on the period from 1878 to 1887 when the Reform Movement broke from normative (Orthodox) Judaism. He will discuss the infamous Trefa Banquet in 1883 and other pivotal events during this time.
Frederick Isaac is a Judaica library consultant and archivist in the Bay Area and is the author of Jews of Oakland and Berkeley. He served as director of the BJE Jewish Community Library from 1990 to 1995.
