THE MEMORIAL CANDLE: What Will Be the Legacy?
Sonia Pilcer, novelist, essayist and screenwriter, was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany to Polish Jewish Holocaust survivors – her father was in Auschwitz and her mother in a forced labor camp. She arrived with her parents in New York City in the 1950s, where they first lived in the St. Marks Hotel on the Lower East Side. Her own first apartment was on the Upper West Side, the setting of her latest work, The Last Hotel, due out in October 2014.
Pilcer, who has also taught writing, is the author of four earlier novels. The Holocaust Kid, her most personal work, depicted a young woman’s struggle to free herself from the shadow of her parents’ experiences during the Holocaust.
