Yom Hashoa - Holocaust Commemoration - THESE WE REMEMBER: In Memory of the Destroyed Communities...

Category :: Community
THESE WE REMEMBER: In Memory of the Destroyed Communities and Those Who Perished

Presented by Florette Lynn

The first Yizkor or memory book was written in 1296 in Nuremburg as a record of communities that were decimated and of individuals who were slaughtered during the Crusades. In the wake of the Holocaust the Yizkor book re-emerged to memorialize the vanished world of Eastern European Jewry.

Over 1000 such books have been written. One of them was the Ivenets Yizkor Book, which Florette Lynn has painstakingly translated from Yiddish to English for the last nine years. This town, which still exists, is some thirty miles from Minsk, the current capital of what is now Belarus.

Florette Lynn grew up speaking Yiddish – it was the only language her parents would speak to her – and attended Workmen’s Circle Jewish schools. She had a career for many years as a librarian at different schools in New Jersey. She is the translator of These We Remember: Yizkor Book of Ivenets, Kamin and Surroundings (Shoah Literature Press, 2008).

All are welcome at this free event.

The cultural program and pot-luck desert follow Shabbat services. Childcare provided for children 11 and younger.
