UNPACKING JEWISH FOLKLIFE: Discovering the Heart of Jewish Culture

Category :: Lecture
It’s much more than old tales and legends. It’s also the recipes, folk tunes, and the clothes we wore. The proverbs, quotes and curses. The customs and traditions. It’s how we live our lives. Dr. Ilana Abramovitch, who teaches about the Jewish Diaspora at Brooklyn College, will explore the intriguing worlds of Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrachi folklife, each with its own unique yet intertwined expression of Jewish life. With your help, she will discuss where secular Jews fit into the mix.

Ilana Abramovitch is the editor of Jews of Brooklyn (Brandeis University Press, 2002) and has taught at Hofstra University and NYU, as well as Brooklyn College and the 92nd Street Y. Most recently she has been working on the culinary delights of the Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan.

All are welcome at this free event.
