WHEN A STRANGER SOJOURNS WITH YOU: The African Refugee Crisis in Israel
Since 2005, more than 60,000 African refugees and asylum-seekers – most fleeing conflict in Eritrea and Sudan – have crossed into Israel. Ironically, Israel, a nation of refugees, has not fully developed a legal process for non-Jewish refugees, and most live in a state of limbo, with little access to basic services or work, and under threat of incarceration or deportation. With a broken asylum process and exploitation of the issue by ultra-nationalist politicians, the asylum seekers are caught in political cross-hairs. Join speakers from the New Israel Fund (NIF) to learn about and discuss the challenges and intense complexities of this situation.

The City Congregation holds Shabbat celebrations twice a month on Friday evenings at 7:30 PM at the 14th Street Y (344 East 14th Street) in Manhattan. Each Shabbat includes a 40-minute humanistic service and a presentation by a guest speaker or TCC members on a Jewish cultural topic or current issue, followed by a pot-luck dessert. Three times a year we gather at 6:30pm for a catered dinner before the service and program. Guests are always welcome. Childcare is available for children 11 and younger.
