WHEN A STRANGER SOJOURNS WITH YOU: The African Refugee Crisis in Israel
Since 2005, more than 60,000 African refugees and asylum-seekers – most fleeing conflict in Eritrea and Sudan – have crossed into Israel. Ironically, Israel, a nation of refugees, has not fully developed a legal process for non-Jewish refugees, and most live in a state of limbo, with little access to basic services or work, and under threat of incarceration or deportation. With a broken asylum process and exploitation of the issue by ultra-nationalist politicians, the asylum seekers are caught in political cross-hairs. Join speakers from the New Israel Fund (NIF) to learn about and discuss the challenges and intense complexities of this situation.
The New Israel Fund (NIF) is a leading organization committed to equality and democracy for all Israelis. NIF is a partnership of Israelis and supporters of Israel worldwide, dedicated to a vision of Israel as both the Jewish homeland and a shared society at peace with itself and its neighbors. NIF strengthens organizations and leaders that work to achieve equality for all citizens of the state; realize the civil and human rights of all, including Arab citizens of Israel; recognize and reinforce the essential pluralism of Israeli society; and empower groups on the economic margins of Israeli society. Widely credited with building Israel’s progressive civil society from scratch, the New Israel Fund has provided over $200 million to more than 800 cutting-edge organizations since its inception.
