THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA: The Colonial Period (1492-1776)
For over 300 years, Jews have been part of the fabric of America. Who were the first Jewish settlers and why and when did they arrive here? How were they received? What role did they play in the development of the young country?
Susan Ryan, TCC member, will explore this critical time period in the birth of the nation and the settlement of Jews. Susan is an amateur historian with a passion for American and Jewish history. She has also been a rock music and popular culture maven for over 37 years, and is an expert on The Beatles. She has been a guest speaker at The Fest For Beatles Fans in New York, Chicago and Boston and also gives NYC-related tours for Beatles fans.
The City Congregation holds Shabbat celebrations twice a month on Friday evenings at 7:30 PM at the 14th Street Y (344 East 14th Street) in Manhattan. Each Shabbat includes a 40-minute humanistic service and a presentation by a guest speaker or TCC members on a Jewish cultural topic or current issue, followed by a pot-luck dessert. Three times a year we gather at 6:30pm for a catered dinner before the service and program. Guests are always welcome. Childcare is available for children 11 and younger.
