REBELS IN RED KERCHIEFS: East European Jewish Women and the Founding of the Jewish Bund

Women played major roles in Russian Jewish political movements of the late 19th century. Their activism contributed to the rise of the movement for Jewish self-determination, as well as the labor party called the Social Democratic Bund. Some of these women came from the working class, others from the middle class. Just by pursuing an education, these women were breaking with traditional Jewish gender roles. Some would go further, becoming union organizers and labor party activists.

Our guest speaker will be Harriet Davis-Kram, assistant professor at Queens College. She specializes in the areas of American Women's History, American Labor History, Immigration, and New York City History. This will be a return visit to TCC by Dr. Davis-Kram who spoke to us in 2006 on Jewish Communal Aid Societies. This talk is made possible with the support of the New York Council for the Humanities.
