THEIR LIFE IS NOW THEIR OWN: The Challenge of Ultra-Orthodox Jews Who Choose to Enter Mainstream American Life
Imagine living for years in darkness and finally emerging into the blinding light. The change can be disorienting and frightening. Imagine living in a world with strict rules and boundaries, and then deciding to enter a world where you now have choice. The new freedom can be exciting, risky and bewildering. This is the challenge of ultra-Orthodox Jews, raised in closed off enclaves, who, like immigrants to a new country, choose to be part of the secular world, but where they don't know the language, the customs, and the social mores. How do they adjust? How do they find their way? How do they deal with isolation from their families of origin?
Footsteps is an organization that provides social, emotional, educational and vocational support to those grappling with the consequences of leaving the insular ultra-religious communities. Lani Santo, the organization's executive corrector, will describe the challenges this population faces and the work of Footsteps in offering guidance, community, and a safe space for making this transition. Members of the Footsteps community will share first-hand accounts of their experiences.
