YOM HASHOA - HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATION
Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony, Songs of the Holocaust
WHY ARE WE … still Jewish?
A rational response to the Holocaust might have been to leave Judaism. Haven't we suffered enough? Yet we cling to our Jewish inheritance. Why do we stay connected? Why do others join us? And how is this identity shaped by the legacy of the Holocaust? Or is it?
Presented by Rabbi Adam Chalom, Dean, North America, of The International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism (IISHJ) and rabbi of Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation in suburban Chicago, Illinois. He holds a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Jewish Studies from the University of Michigan.
This is the opening presentation of a week-end-long seminar, “Four Questions for Today’s Jews”, of the IISHJ. The Shabbat program is free and open to the public.
The City Congregation holds Shabbat celebrations twice a month on Friday evenings at 7:30 PM at the 14th Street Y (344 East 14th Street) in Manhattan. Each Shabbat includes a 40-minute humanistic service and a presentation by a guest speaker or TCC members on a Jewish cultural topic or current issue, followed by a pot-luck dessert. Three times a year we gather at 6:30pm for a catered dinner before the service and program. Guests are always welcome. Childcare is available for children 11 and younger.
