Shabbat Service & Cultural Program - FROM SAMUEL GOMPERS TO RANDI WEINGARTE

Category :: Community
Jews in the American Labor Movement

What are the roots of Jewish participation in the American labor movement? What’s the connection to the socialist press, the Workmen’s Circle, the Communist Party and the New Deal? Did Jewish women play a special role in the struggles of workers? How did Jewish involvement in the labor movement get a new lease on life in the 1960s and 70s, intersecting with the civil rights movement and the folk music revival? And what’s the status of Jewish involvement in labor today?

Bennett Muraskin, adult education director for the Jewish Cultural School and Society in West Orange, NJ, will explore this critical chapter in Jewish American history. Bennett is a familiar speaker to City Congregation and has spoken widely on Jewish topics. He is a regular columnist for Jewish Currents and Outlook magazines and has written three books, including Let Justice Well Up Like Water: Progressive Jews from Hillel to Helen Suzman (2005).

Please join us for a pot-luck dessert following our Shabbat service and cultural program. Childcare is provided for children 11 and younger.

All are welcome at this free event.
