Pearls of Africa: The Abayudaya Jews of Uganda

Category :: Movie
Directed by Guy Lieberman (52 min, South Africa, 2007)

Lieberman's encounter with the Abayudaya raises questions of faith, identity, devotion and belonging. The Abayudaya are a unique community of 600 Black Ugandans who chose to adopt the Jewish faith about 90 years ago. Although the group was banned by Idi Amin, they re-grouped after his death in 1978. Today, they worship in several small rural synagogues, largely isolated from the wider Jewish world. Followed by Q&A. Co-sponsored by Bina. Part of the 6th Annual Sheba Film Festival.
