Jews in the England of Shakespeare with Dr. Brian Weiser
As an expatriate, do you ever feel like a fish out of water and wonder if you'll ever really belong in this city and this country? At JICNY, we've heard it all before; and we are here to reassure you.
We are launching an exciting and inspiring series of panels/interviews featuring stories of successful immigration to New York City from all over the world. You will identify with our panelists, hear about Jewish life in their countries of origins, how they overcame different kinds of hardships (physical, financial or emotional) and finally settled happily in New York City, building a successful new business or/and a beautiful family. Come and enjoy these uplifting life stories in a cocktail setting. Fish and chips will be served, with a variety of beers, stouts and ales, at the end of the class.
In 1290 Edward I expelled the Jews from England; throughout the sixteenth century they returned to England surreptitiously. In 1655 they gained tacit approval from Oliver Cromwell and in 1664 official legal recognition from Charles II. What was life like for Jews in the first few decades after their return?
