JEWS AND JAZZ: From Satchmo to the Israeli Invasion

Category :: Lecture
Wynton Marsalis has famously called jazz a "gumbo," and since the earliest days of that musical genre, Jews have been an important part of that recipe. From Louis Armstrong to Benny Goodman to Lee Konitz to John Zorn, Jews have been intimately involved in the development and promotion of jazz.

TCC member Brett Gold, who has been listening to and playing jazz for over 45 years, will talk about the influence Jews have had on the development of jazz, from its beginnings in New Orleans to its contemporary incarnation as a world music. As part of presentation, he will be playing a number of rare recordings featuring Jewish musicians, composers and entrepreneurs. Be prepared to tap your feet!

Adult Perspectives is the name of our Sunday Adult Education program. These sessions are led by Rabbi Peter Schweitzer or by a member of the congregation. TCC Members occasionally participate on panel discussions and guest speakers, including our own members, are also invited to make special presentations.

Adult Perspectives meets twice a month on Sundays from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM at 15 West 86th Street (SAJ) in Manhattan. There is no charge and all are welcome to attend.

All dates and programs are subject to change. To confirm events and for more information, contact the office at 212-213-1002 or [email protected].
