“If you don’t learn to write your life story, someone else will write it for you.” Thus lies the inspiration behind the Power Writers Program, a New York poetry class that offers inner-city high school students a chance to express themselves. This remarkable documentary focuses on a trio of friends and classmates from the Bronx (Anthony Pittman, Karina Sanchez, and Pearl Quick) who attempt to use their gift for language to escape from their seemingly predetermined futures.
