Just when you thought everything relating to Anne Frank has been said, along comes this fascinating feature-length documentary that tells a long-overlooked aspect of her story, the role her father played in making his daughter’s diary into one of the most important and widely-published pieces of Holocaust literature. As we see in this complex portrait, Otto Frank found a renewed bond with his daughter through her diaries, and his life gradually changed in the service of her legacy. He also felt a huge moral responsibility: Should you publish your daughter’s diary? What about the parts that Anne would not have intended for publication? To what degree should the privacy of the main characters be respected? One of the film’s many strengths is its use of footage and recordings of Otto Frank.
