EROS: A FESTIVAL BY LABA
A 2-Day Multimedia Event Exploring Love & Desire Through Dance, Art, Music, Theater and More – at The 14th Street Y on May 19th & 21st
EROS: A Festival by LABA is a two-day multidisciplinary exploration of love and desire held at the 14th Street Y, featuring dance, acting, art, music, readings, and an after-dark teaching on the hot and heavy biblical text – the Song of Songs. The work presented in the festival was created by LABA fellows in response to a year-long study of the theme of Eros in ancient Jewish texts. LABA fellow and theater director Ronit Muszkatblit is the artistic director of EROS.
The 1st night of the festival, PULSE, will begin with a site-specific installation by David Tirosh which reacts to the group’s heartbeat, followed by a short multi-media performance "Love Thing," by actor David Deblinger and a dance theater piece, "I Am My Beloved," directed by Basmat Hazan and choreographed and danced by Jesse Zarritt with actor Jake Goodman – combining modern dance, visual art and a narrative play based on chapter 5 of the Song of Songs.
At 9:30pm, there will be a gallery show that will remain up during the festival – which includes: a site-specific installation by Ilene Sunshine, who will explore the erotic subtext of “looking” through her colorful intervention of the lighting fixtures; a 360 degree painting by Manju Shandler in which she examines aspects of longing and seaside tourism; and a display of ancient-looking vessels made of found plastic bottles by Shari Mendelson, which looks into aspects of continuity in love and life. There will also be a photo exhibition by Eran Dinur that looks at roles of hands in expressions of love. At 10:00pm, there will be a performance by The Sway Machinery, featuring fellow Jeremiah Lockwood performing a brand new songs cycle entitled “Monsters in the Ancient World.” This work-in-progress will examine archetypes of love in human experience.
The 2nd night of the festival, AMUSE, will begin with a reception in the gallery and an informal discussion with the visual artists. At 9:30pm, the group will enter the theater and sit in a circle around Joey Weisenberg who will be playing Jewish mediation music with Indian rhythms. This will be followed by a teaching on fruit and sex in the Song of Songs led by the LABA teaching staff. The last performance, which will begin at 11:00pm, will feature Pharaoh’s Daughter, featuring fellow Basya Schecter performing songs inspired by the Song of Songs.
Complimentary drinks and dessert will be served both evenings. To purchase tickets, go to http://14streety.interticket.com/search.php
