Adult Perspectives - PALLIATIVE CARE AND DECISION MAKING IN ADVANCED ILLNES

Category :: Community
What You Need to Know to Make Healthcare Decisions for You and Your Family

The longer we live and the older we get the greater the likelihood that we will face the serious illnesses of our loved ones, or have to deal with our own serious medical conditions. How do we navigate these often complicated and challenging situations? How do we mitigate the pain and suffering? How do we get emotional relief?

Dr. Nathan Goldstein, associate professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and president of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah in Manhattan, will discuss ways to conceptualize healthcare decisions and provide a framework for having conversations with your doctor and your family members. Using real clinical cases, he will review the common pitfalls people make and help guide you to determine the core principles behind treatment decisions. He will also review the role of palliative care and explain how it differs from end-of-life care.
