Photographer Yael Ben-Zion Explores Mixed Marriage
In 2009, Yael Ben-Zion contacted an online parent group in Washington Heights, her Manhattan neighborhood, and invited couples who define themselves as “mixed” to participate in her Intermarriage Project, which resulted in her book Intermarried. Being intermarried herself, she was interested in the many challenges faced by couples who choose to share their lives regardless of their different origins, ethnicities, races or religions. Through layered images and revealing texts (including excerpts from a questionnaire she asked her subjects to fill out), Intermarried investigates the multifaceted issues posed by intermarriage.
Yael Ben-Zion was born in Minneapolis and raised in Israel and is a graduate of the International Center of Photography. Her work often considers the relationship of the personal to the political and has been exhibited in the United States and in Europe. Intermarried was selected for American Photography 30, a collection of the year’s best images, and featured in the New York Times Sunday Review.
