Adult Perspectives - GOING SOUTH: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement

Category :: Lecture
Jews went South to fight for civil rights in numbers disproportionate to their representation in the general U.S. population. What, if anything, makes fighting racism a particularly Jewish endeavor? Did gender shape the experiences of Jewish women who went South for sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the 1964 Freedom Summer and other less-known activist roles?

Historian Dr. Debra Schultz, author of Going South: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement (New York University Press, 2001), and founding program director of the Open Society Institute/Soros Foundation’s Network Women’s Program, will discuss these questions and her motivations for documenting Jewish women’s civil rights activism.

All are welcome at this free event.
