Adult Perspectives - THE ORIGINS OF HUMANISTIC JUDAISM

Category :: Lecture
A Fifth Year Memorial to Its Founder,
Rabbi Sherwin Wine (1928-2007)

Sherwin Wine, the son of Russian immigrants, was born in Detroit and grew up in a Conservative Jewish household. He trained to be a Reform rabbi and was ordained by Hebrew Union College in 1956. But by 1963 he broke from the Reform movement and founded the Birmingham Temple in suburban Detroit, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism. A storm of controversy quickly ensued when it became known that that this new congregation did not recognize God.

How did this new movement get launched? How did Rabbi Wine arrive at his ideas? What are the basic tenets of Humanistic Judaism that he promoted and which endure today? Rabbi Peter Schweitzer will discuss these questions and more, in tribute to his teacher and the founder of our movement.
