Riddled with Shame and Doubts, Challenged by Ethical Dilemmas, Traumatized by Violence, Beset by Unbridled Power and Rage—and Prized as Corporate Media Properties!

Did you ever wonder why Superman needs to disguise himself as Clark Kent? Or how Batman gets away with being a vigilante? Is it just a coincidence that so many superheroes are orphans whose mythic origins are linked to the violent deaths of their parents? How have the “squeaky clean” superheroes of the past evolved into today’s tormented anti-heroes? And, of course, how did the Jewishness of so many of the creators of the best-known superheroes infiltrate their characters and stories?

Danny Fingeroth, veteran comics writer, editor, and educator, best known for his longtime stint as editor of Marvel’s Spider-Man comics line, will explore these questions and more with an engaging visual presentation. Author of Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us about Ourselves and Our Society and Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics and the Creation of the Superhero, Fingeroth is currently at work on a graphic novel biography of real-life Jewish super-villain Jack Ruby.
