Join noted Tour Leader Justin Ferate on this special nostalgic visit to the Jewish Lower East Side.
Among the numerous sites we’ll see will be the newly restored Eldridge Street Synagogue – the largest and grandest Eastern European synagogue on the Lower East Side. We’ll also view the Old-Law tenement where Eddie Cantor was born, the former Jarmulowsky’s Bank, Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie, the Independent Kletzker Brotherly Aid Association, Metivtha Tifereth Jerusalem of America – one of the oldest yeshivas in America, the legendary Garden Cafeteria, and the Daily Forward Building – now converted into apartments. We’ll view the Educational Alliance and the Bialystoker Home for the Aged. We’ll also stop at the handsome Beaux Arts mikvah (ritual bathhouse) on Grand Street and discuss the development and the importance of the Henry Street Settlement in American history.
Tour will end at Kossar’s Bialystoker Bakery – considered by food critic Mimi Sheraton to be the makers of the finest bialys on the planet earth! Bring home a baker’s dozen!
