Mabul (The Flood), from Jewish director Guy Nattiv opens at AMC Theater Friday May 4th. It's a beautiful story about a Jewish family in Israel, struggling to make sense of their lives as individuals, and as a family.
Everything in Yoni's life is complicated. A gifted student, he's almost 13, but physically undeveloped and desperate to change before his Bar Mitzvah. He does pull ups every night with heavy weights tied to his legs and seeks out ways to deepen his voice so that the class bullies will stop calling him Helium. With his parents on the verge of a breakup, Yoni's autistic older brother Tomer, hidden away for years in an institution, returns home. His sudden arrival not only turns Yoni's life upside down, but also shakes the already unstable foundations of the entire Roshko family.
The film recently picked up the Critics’ Choice Award at the Outaouais Film Festival in Gatineau and was also an official selection at Montreal’s last World Film Festival.
The young and talented Guy Nattiv has seen many of his previous films acclaimed internationally. The film was presented at the Haifa International Film Festival where it won awards for Best Film, Best Cinematography, and a special award for actor Yoav Rotman. At the Berlin International Film Festival where the film was selected in the Generations Kplus section, the film also won a Special Mention from the Jury. The film was also nominated for several categories by the Israel Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Music. It won the award for Best Supporting Actor (Michael Moshonov).
