JPL Lecture in Yiddish on Chaim Grade

Category :: Lecture
Lecture in Yiddish on “Chaim Grade: The Struggle of the Self and the Striving for Harmony” by Avrom Novershtern. Cost $7 for JPL members and students, $12 others. For advance tickets and information, call 514-345-6416 or 514-345-2627 ext. 3006 or visit www.jewishpubliclibrary.org.

A founding member of the Yung-Vilne literary group. Chaim Grade’s post-Holocaust writing was an attempt to recreate the destroyed world of Vilna as fully-realized universe. This lecture will consider how, within this grand design, Grade struggled to imbue his characters with irreconcilable inner tensions.

Avrom Novershtern is a Professor of Yiddish Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the director of Beth Shalom Aleichem in Tel Aviv and co-director of the Yiddish summer program at Tel Aviv University. He has published widely about Yiddish literature and culture.
