What is a Crypto Jew? Crypto Jews were Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal who converted to Catholicism in the late 14th century after the expulsion of 1492. Some willingly converted and others were coerced. Many Crypto Jews secretly continued to practice Judaism and passed on a hidden legacy to their descendants.
