THE WARTIME ESCAPE: Margaret and H.A. Rey’s Journey from France

Category :: Educational
OPENING RECEPTION: THE WARTIME ESCAPE: Margaret and H.A. Rey’s Journey from France

Beloved monkey Curious George, the main character in the children’s books and animated episodes shown on PBS, almost didn’t exist. Margaret and H.A. Rey, creators of Curious George, were German-Jews honeymooning in Paris in June 1940 just after Hitler commenced the invasion of France.

The exhibit chronicles Rey’s escape from France and the Nazis. During their harrowing escape they carried with them the manuscripts that would be the impetus for the mischievous primate known to generations as Curious George.

Louise Borden the author of The Journey that Saved Curious George, will speak about her discovery of the Rey’s little known story, how she researched their escape route, and wrote a book about their extraordinary journey to freedom.

February 12, 2015 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Reception 5:30 p.m.
Talk 6:30 p.m.
