The Irish American Heritage Center presents an encore screening of the documentary film, Shalom Ireland (57 min, 2003, USA, director: Valerie Lapin Ganley), about Ireland’s remarkable, yet little known Jewish community. The IAHC screened the film to a large audience in 2005.
Shalom Ireland chronicles the history of Irish Jews while celebrating the unique culture created by blending Irish and Jewish traditions. From gun-running for the Irish Republican Army during Ireland’s War of Independence, to smuggling fellow Jews escaping from the Holocaust into Palestine, Shalom Ireland tells the untold story of how Irish Jews participated in the creation of both Ireland and Israel.
The film features several prominent Irish Jews including Robert Briscoe, the first Jew elected Lord Mayor of Dublin; Rabbi Isaac Herzog, the renowned Talmudic scholar who not only served as the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland but was also the first Chief Rabbi of Israel; and Rabbi Herzog's son, Chaim Herzog, who became President of Israel.
Today, as their population declines and their culture is in jeopardy of becoming extinct, Irish Jews have launched an effort to revitalize Ireland's once vibrant Jewish community.
Lapin Ganley has more than twenty years experience working on documentary television programs and series, including programs for PBS and KQED, San Francisco. She has won two Emmy awards. Shalom Ireland was inspired by her discovery that her Lithuanian great-grandparents were the first Jewish couple married in Waterford, Ireland.
The evening features the film screening and live Klezmer and Celtic music by harpist, Annette Bjorling.
Shalom Ireland is Thursday, April 28 at 7:30pm. Admission is $15 for the general public and $10 for IAHC members. For more information about the screening, call 773-282-7035.
