Conversations at the Vilna is a series of spirited discussions around the Vilna Shul's old study table with local scholars and authors about topics relevant to Jewish identity. This conversation will be led by Daniel E. Levenson. What does it mean to be Jewish in a modern world? How do we find a place for ancient traditions in our modern lives? Come and explore these questions with Daniel Levenson, writer, teacher and publisher of the New Vilna Review, a publication dedicated to creating open, accessible and vibrant dialogue within the Jewish community.
Session 2: The Emancipation of the Jews of Europe - a discussion of what the "Emancipation of the Jews" involved, and the impact it had on individual and collective Jewish identity. Some of the questions we will explore will include: What can the events of the emancipation tell us about how Jews were thought of (both by themselves and by others) in the period before they were given rights in Europe? How did gaining such rights influence Jewish identity in western Europe? In what ways can we discern the influence of these events within our own lives, some 200 years later?
