Sol Gittleman: Coming to America: Jews and Other Folks, 1620 – 2012

Category :: Lecture
Very few people come to the United States because they are doing exceptionally well somewhere else. This country has always attracted the oppressed, unwanted, and desperate. Since the Pilgrims arrived in 1620, very little has changed. Generally the newcomers are not warmly welcomed and have to make their way as strangers in a strange land. For the Jews, it was no different.

Sol Gittleman is the Alice and Nathan Gantcher University Professor of Judaic Studies at Tufts University where he teaches courses on Yiddish culture, immigration, the Religions of Abraham, and American baseball history. He was born in Hoboken, NJ, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and Ukraine. He received his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan and has written five books. He and his wife have three children and seven grandchildren, who call every day.
