Collecting, Preserving and Exhibiting: Exploring the Collections of the Nation’s Medical Museum

Category :: Lecture
From the Civil War to 21st-century conflicts in the Middle East, military needs have always pushed medicine’s limits. The National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM)--established during the Civil War as the Army Medical Museum, a center for the collection of specimens for research in military medicine and surgery—collects, preserves and exhibits both historical and contemporary collections related to anatomy and pathology as well as artifacts and archival materials that inspire and promote an understanding of medicine. JMM is excited to welcome NMHM staff to Baltimore for an exploration of their collections. Inspired by the JMM’s current exhibit Beyond Chicken Soup: Jews and Medicine in America we will explore how NMHM transformed from a “cabinet of curiosities” into a vital resource, contributing to scientific collaborations and public appreciation of the value of military medicine to the nation.
